Kennedy Seeks Alito Filibuster

A group of Democrats is planning to delay proceedings this afternoon when the U.S. Senate is slated to close debate before scheduling a confirmation vote on the Supreme Court nomination of Samuel Alito.

The ballot is likely to take place Tuesday, just hours before President Bush's State of the Union Address.

Massachusetts Senators John Kerry and Edward Kennedy, among others, plan to employ a debate-and-delay filibuster to hold up the confirmation vote. They need 41 of the 44 Democrats in the Senate to sustain the debate and delay move.

Bob Oakes speaks with Senator Kennedy.
