Boston to Close 5 Elementary Schools
Boston plans to close five elementary schools this summer.
WBUR's Bianca Vazquez Toness reports.
BVT: Faced with declining enrollment and increasing costs, Boston school officials want to shutter schools in Brighton, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan and Roxbury.
Kim Janey from Masaschusetts Advocates for Children worries about the impact on neighborhoods that have already lost schools.
JANEY: Roxbury already has more children than it has seats. So i'd be concerned about losing a building.
BVT: Students from closed schools would be assigned to other elementary schools or new K-8 programs. The Boston School Committee will vote on the plan at the end of the month.
