WBURT Union Pulls Support Of Phone Ban

The union representing MBTA drivers says it no longer supports the T’s new policy banning drivers from carrying cell phones.

The T created the rule after Aiden Quinn, a 24-year-old Green Line trolley driver, ran a red light and hit another train while allegedly texting his girlfriend May 8. Quinn was fired Thursday.

The Boston Carmen’s Union initially supported the idea but filed a grievance Thursday. The union has not said why.

Despite the challenge, the new rule will take effect Monday.
