The Associated PressMass. Reports Second Swine Flu Death

Published June 29, 2009  Updated July 25

BOSTON — State health officials say an elderly Boston man died from complications of the swine flu, the second death tied to the H1N1 virus in Massachusetts.

Health officials said Monday the 84-year-old man, whose name was not released, died on June 18 after being hospitalized for six days. They said he also suffered from underlying health problems that increased his risk of complications from the flu.

A Boston woman in her 30s died from the virus earlier this month.

Officials said there have been 474 confirmed cases of the swine flu in Boston and 1,287 statewide as of June 26.

Health Commissioner John Auerbach said the numbers of flu cases have been decreasing in the state, but authorities still are seeing person-to-person spread of the virus.
