What an inspiring speech! Through lessons in civics and service learning experiences my young elementary students learn early on that they are citizens of their school, town, state, and national communities. They also learn that along with citizenship and rights come important responsibilities, and that even young people like them can make a difference in the life of the community they live in. I applaud President Obama's challenge to all students to work hard and do their part to make their lives and the country a better place to live.

Wow, what an incredibly moving and thoughtful speech. I couldn't believe there was controversy about this and I defended the President's right to give such a speech, but I expected it to be more boilerplate - good, solid, noncontroversial. However, this speech was not just good, it was terrific! I hope my sons are able to hear it and take it in. I feel very lucky that we have the kind of President that is able to deliver a speech that really speaks directly to kids and asks them to bring their best to our country and the world. Thank you, Mr. President!

Unfortunately Ree, we live in a time where partisan bickering trumps reason and common sense. What the president is planning to tell students is long-overdue, and hopefully will have a dramatic impact on at least a few students, which will do nothing but help this country in the long run. Hopefully someday those who achieve will be better suited to put the USA on the right track, starting with dismantling the media machine that perpetuates the misguided fury that is sadly 'forcing' some parents to withdraw their kids from school for today.

Very sad indeed.

I am speaking as an independent and a person with some skepticism regarding Presedent Obama's policies. However, I cannot understand the negativity surrounding this speech. We should be delighted that our head of state should take the time to speak to our children and to reiterate the values we must all share. Work hard, study hard, listen to your elders, be respectful and you can live your dreams. Sounds pretty perfect to me.
