A top adviser tells The Associated Press he will formally announce his candidacy for the Democratic nomination on Thursday at the TD Bank Garden, where the NBA franchise plays. The person spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity ahead of the announcement.

Pagliuca is managing director of Bain Capital, Mitt Romney's former investment firm. While he has supported Republican candidates in the past, the adviser says that "over the course of the campaign, it will become crystal clear that he is a true progressive."

Pagliuca will join a field with Attorney General Martha Coakley and, as of Friday, Rep. Michael Capuano.

State Sen. Scott Brown and Canton Selectman Bob Burr are seeking the Republican nomination.

Kennedy died Aug. 25 of brain cancer.
