Bruins Beat Oilers, 2-0

BOSTON — Rookie Tuukka Rask turned aside 19 shots for his second shutout in eight NHL starts, and Blake Wheeler and Vladimir Sobotka set each other up for goals to lead the Boston Bruins to a 2-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.

Rask was locked in a scoreless duel with veteran Nikolai Khabibulin until Wheeler converted on Sobotka’s hard work 2:47 into the third period. Sobotka finished off a 2-on-1 at 7:02.

Daniel Paille assisted on both goals.

Rask was making his fourth start of the season. He gave Boston its third straight shutout of Edmonton and the Bruins’ eighth win in a row over the Oilers, dating back to 2000. He had blanked the New York Rangers in his only start last season.

The win, Claude Julien’s 100th as the Bruins’ coach, continued a lose-one, win one pattern for the Bruins that began after they lost opening night.

Edmonton has lost four of its last five.

The Oilers last defeated Boston Oct. 17, 2000, and last scored against the Bruins Dec. 3, 2005. Boston’s shutout streak over Edmonton grew to 204:02.

Rask, who also has one NHL relief appearance, was not severely tested.

Sobotka had a second-period scoring chance enter the net just after the horn ending the period. In the third, he outworked Theo Peckham along the boards and got help from Paille before feeding Wheeler in front for his fourth goal of the season. Sobotka’s score was his first of the season.

Edmonton had two power-play chances later in the period, but wasted the second half of the second one because of a penalty for too many men.

The first period was quiet, with the Bruins wasting their only power-play chance.

Action picked up in the middle period with the second half featuring the best opportunities, starting when Khabibulin stopped a Zdeno Chara slap shot from 30 feet out.

The Bruins then had a chance as Marco Sturm broke down the left side and whistled one wide, which in turn sparked an Edmonton turnaround that saw Patrick O’Sullivan with a semi break down the left side.

Rask turned a slap shot aside with his left arm. Soon after, he handled Sam Gagner, who was breaking down the right. Ales Hemsky had a chance from the faceoff circle to Rask’s right and, with the goalie scrambling to cover the open net, hit the outside of the goal.

Sobotka was stoned by Khabibulin from the doorstep on his disallowed goal, got the puck right back and was in the process of shooting when the horn sounded. There was no argument from the Bruins.
