Anytime you have people who are not living in your rental unit visit it's a liability, but your right as long as it's not run like a club it's legal. The place I was talking about was not as there was a lot of drinking and as I said it was loud. Not sure if they charged.

Kind of reminds of the loft scene in NYC in the 70's when jazz musicians would play private gigs in peoples lofts.

The whitehaus has filled a HUMONGOUS void in Boston's music scene. If only there could be a club that provided this setting...

i dont know if there is any liability or legality issue. as far as i can see, people have the right to free assembly in their home. if that includes a few people sharing music or poetry at an appropriate volume, i don't think there is a problem, especially since they don't charge for shows and don't serve alcohol.

It's nice that they are taking control of the situation to some degree. I hope the neighbors are sympathetic.
I use to live in JP and for a while this bunch of so called musicians did this kind of thing in a basement a few doors down from where I lived. It was loud, obnoxious and the cops shut it down. They tried to keep doing it for a while but in the end they just did not figure it out.
You can't make that much noise at night and after 10 PM it becomes a nuisance.

They must have a very sympathetic landlord as well. The liability of doing this pretty huge. Unlicensed music shows in a residence.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/notorious
Notorious def. 2: publicly or generally known, as for a particular trait

Does not imply BAD. Although the word can be used in that context, clearly not in this case.

Notoriety, remember, means being famous for something BAD. I am just a carpenter, and I was trying to figure out why you'd talk so glowingly then saythat they were notorious.
