Fernald Supporters Allege Neglect At Facility
Family members of residents at the Fernald Developmental Center say state authorities have allowed conditions to deteriorate at the facility, which is slated for closure next year.
The Fernald League for the Retarded has sent a letter to the Department of Developmental Services alleging low staffing levels and neglect of both patients and the Fernald building.
“Several people who have moved said the reason they moved was they were fearful the way things were going downhill here,” said Marilyn Meagher, the group’s president.
Services at the 150-year-old center and other facilities for the mentally disabled were scaled back earlier this year due to budget cuts.
The Patrick administration has not yet responded to the criticism.
