Betsy Burleigh said choral music is her life and she looked forward to honoring the long-standing group’s legacy with a diverse repertoire — some opera, and lots of choral pieces.

“I’m trying to get to what’s the essence of this music that we’re performing at this time,” Burleigh said. “What’s it trying to say? And to try to go through that whole process with a feeling of joy.”

Burleigh said she was also excited to conduct her inaugural concert in Boston’s old South Church.

The famous Skinner organ there was silenced this time last year after MBTA construction damaged a fragile wall in the historic building.
