The Stupac Ammendment is only part of the issue, and is one that has Ms. Coakley croaking that famous Kerry line - " I was for it before I was against it" when she speaks of the HealthCare plan. This issue is being used to cloud the debate on the fundamental issue, which is, can we afford it? To do so, the plan is to take $565 billion from Medicare/Medicaid to pay for it.So the elderly and disabled give up benefits so that we can all feel good about taking care of the uninsured, which coverage is still not paid for per the GAO.What ever happened to the concept that the states should be the proving ground, the laboratory for new ideas? Mass. has a plan in place, and it isn't paid for.Don't get lost in the rhetoric.

I regret that Scott Brown, who should know better, misstated the Stupac Amendment and Bob Oakes let that pass. This does not prohibit Federal funding for abortion but, rather, prohibits any person from privately purchasing any health insurance plan that is part of any national health insurance program that will pay for abortions. Right, it Prohibits you from paying for abortions from your own funds. It takes the long standing Hyde amendment (prohibition on federal funding which has been law for decades) and extends it to a prohibition on anyone paying for abortion for themselves. This is blatantly unconstitutional.
