Boston Globe Union President Ousted

BOSTON — The president of The Boston Globe’s largest employees’ union has been ousted for allegedly violating financial rules.

A jury of five randomly selected Boston Newspaper Guild members found Daniel Totten guilty Wednesday of signing another union official’s name to his own paycheck, improperly using a union credit card, and refusing to submit timely expense reports.

Totten’s profile rose last summer as the union negotiated with the paper’s owner, The New York Times Co., over threats to close the Globe unless the guild accepted job and pay cuts. Some union members expressed dissatisfaction with the way he handled negotiations.

Totten was expelled from the union and fined $254.

He refused to participate in the trial process, calling it a “travesty.” He plans to appeal.
