BSO Earns Grammy Nomination For Self-Produced Record

BOSTON — As the Grammy nominations roll in, the Boston Symphony Orchestra is celebrating a first.

While the BSO has been tapped in the past, on Thursday the organization got its breakthrough nod for an orchestral recording that it produced completely in-house, without a record label.

The BSO’s performance of Ravel’s “Daphnis Et Chloe” was nominated for three classical music categories, including Best Classical Album, Best Engineered Classical Album and Best Orchestral Performance.

Maestro James Levine lead the performance.

BSO Managing Director Mark Volpe said the Grammy news validates the organization’s decision to self-produce following the breakdown of the recording industry.

“We don’t need a label with a publicity machine to drive consideration for a Grammy,” Volpe said, “we can do it on our own, which I think bodes well for the future.”

This puts an interesting spin on the concept of DIY, doesn’t it? Out of the basement and into the concert hall.

The BSO earned seven nominations in total, including Best Pop Instrumental Album and Best Long Form Music Video.
