WBURPowerball Makes Its Massachusetts Debut

BOSTON — Powerball has come to Massachusetts. The national lottery goes on sale in the state for the first time Sunday.

Most states already offer the popular drawing. Powerball makes national headlines when winners take home hundreds of millions of dollars. Now Massachusetts wants to cash in.

State Treasurer Tim Cahill said it might hurt participation in other Massachusetts lotteries. But he says Powerball will also bring in new people.

“The big jackpots tend to draw in the casual player. And at the end of the day more money means more local aid,” Cahill said.

As much as an extra $25 million a year, according to Cahill.
