The record rains are straining many of the approximately 3,000 public and private dams in Massachusetts. With rivers rising high above normal levels, officials are keeping a close watch.

To find out what engineers are looking for, on Wednesday WBUR spoke with Mike Galvin, a project engineer with the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, at the Upper Mystic Lake Dam between Arlington and Medford where he was monitoring water levels.

This program aired on March 31, 2010.
