Mass. Senate Again Fails To Hold Gambling Session

The Massachusetts Senate has again delayed the conclusion of its expanded gambling debate.

An objection by Democratic Sen. Susan Fargo postponed Monday's session to Tuesday. On Friday, Republican Minority Leader Richard Tisei asked that it be tabled.

A session on Saturday was aborted after fewer than the 21 senators needed for a quorum trekked to the Statehouse.

Members have various reasons for seeking delays in a broader proposal to allow up to three casinos in Massachusetts.

The GOP wants the Senate to vote on amendments preserving some of the revenue to tax relief or local aid. Others object to proposals to make portions of the casinos open to smoking. And others argue expanded gambling will broaden the state's social ills.

Members are scheduled to take up the issue on Tuesday.
