Somerville Gets $400K To Clean Up Brownfields

Somerville has received $400,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up contaminated former industrial and commercial sites known as brownfields.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone says the grant will spur economic development.

"With these types of moneys we can clean the soil, which will set the palette in order for development to occur on that property, and when development occurs we'll have new construction jobs, more industry coming in, more housing and increasing commercial tax base revenues," he said.

Some of the funds will go toward cleaning up the future site of the Green Line stop in Somerville's Union Square.
