Mass. Gov. Announces Trade Mission To UK, Israel

Gov. Deval Patrick is planning a trade mission to Britain and Israel in March with a focus on growing businesses and jobs in the state's innovation-based economy.

Patrick said Wednesday that a team of leading state business executives and government officials will accompany him on the trip, which begins in Israel on March 7 and ends in Britain on March 17.

Patrick said the purpose of the trip is to create jobs here in Massachusetts.

"Our mission is to solidify Massachusetts' place as the worldwide leader in a whole range of innovation industries, most specifically IT, life sciences and also clean tech," Patrick said.

The governor said last month that a group of local CEOs has encouraged him to travel more to sell the state.

"Like Massachusetts, the U.K. and Israel have thriving innovation economies and we look forward to strengthening existing relationships and forging new ones," he said.

Patrick has traveled to China and California as governor, but curtailed travel as he approached his re-election last fall.

According to Patrick, the state has budgeted $300,000 for the 10-day trip.
