Lawrence Property Owners Eligible For Break On Back Taxes

Some Lawrence property owners may be able to get a bit of a break on back taxes they owe to the state.

Starting April 1, residents can apply for an amnesty program. Property owners who are approved will have 75 percent of the interest, collection costs and penalties they owe waived.

It's a way for the city to get money back by giving some.

Lawrence City Council President Frank Moran says he used to think it would be better for the city to place a lien or take the property to get its money.

"We want to squeeze people, but we don't want to strangle them either," Moran said.

Moran hopes the city will get $2 million from the small number who will be able to pay.

"The average person wouldn't be able to come up with that money right away," Moran said. "There's no way. I don't think there's no way they would be able to."

The program will run from April through the end of June.
