The Boston Globe Could Print The Boston Herald

Boston’s archrival daily newspapers could soon share costs in printing and delivery. The Boston Globe and the Boston Herald have competed for decades. Now they’re ready to scratch each others’ backs.

The Herald says it has outlined a deal with the Globe to print and deliver most of the Herald’s papers. In a statement, Herald Publisher Pat Purcell said falling circulation and revenue are forcing his tabloid to cut operating expenses.

Meanwhile the broadsheet Globe would get an undisclosed sum to use its presses and trucks to roll out its chief competitor.

The negotiation reflects a growing realization that both dailies expect each other to be around for a while, and that they now see cost-sharing on strategic items as a new reality.

Herald publisher Purcell has told his drivers he’s preparing a severance package.
