To open the Boston Pops' 2011 season Wednesday night, Broadway's Linda Eder will pay tribute to Judy Garland on stage with a little help from YouTube.

Amateur singers' versions of “Over the Rainbow,” submitted to the Pops via YouTube or email over the past few months, will be part of a collage screened over the stage at Symphony Hall.

According to conductor Keith Lockhart, “all talent levels, all ages and various takes on things” are represented in the video. He estimates that the Pops collected "a couple hundred videos.”

Lockhart said the invitation to send in self-made videos is another attempt to reach audiences online.

“We haven't done as much as we could to reach them over the Internet," Lockhart said. "This is a small interactive step for the Boston Pops that, possibly, could turn into a giant leap.”

The do-it-yourself "Over the Rainbow" videos will also be featured on the Boston Pops YouTube channel and website.

This program aired on May 11, 2011. The audio for this program is not available.
