Transportation Secretary Mullan Set To Investigate Safety Concerns

State Transportation Secretary Jeffrey Mullan said he has gathered a team to investigate controversial comments recently made by a Big Dig engineer.

The team will look into claims by Helmut Ernst that engineers are hesitant to report safety concerns for fear of lawsuits.

Mullan said he wants to know if that's the opinion of one person or the opinion of many.

"I want an outside party to come in and verify what it is we're doing, how it is we're doing it and improvements we can make on that process,” Mullan said.

He placed Ernst on unpaid administrative leave last week pending the outcome of the investigation. Mullan said the investigation will take about 10 days.
