Mass. Congressional Delegation Talks Debt Ceiling

Congressional leaders have reached a deal with the White House over how to raise the debt ceiling and avoid default. But it still needs to be passed by both the House and the Senate.

On Monday, Massachusetts Democrats in the House will be briefed by their leaders on the framework of the deal. They are likely to vote on it later Monday.

Rep. Michael Capuano said over the weekend that he’s open to a bill that has cuts if it saves the country from default.

"I am willing to compromise. I will take cuts in programs that I support, programs that I think are basic, as long as those cuts are thoughtful and they are not targeted only on those programs," Capuano said.

Capuano and other Democrats in the delegation are disappointed the plan raises no revenues. Sen. Scott Brown has said he’s willing to support a plan that has spending cuts and doesn’t raise taxes.

This program aired on August 1, 2011. The audio for this program is not available.
