Woburn Cop Shot, Wounded During Robbery

A Woburn police officer is expected to recover from multiple gunshot wounds he suffered while responding to an attempted robbery at a jewelry store Tuesday morning.

Officer Robert DeNapoli, 51, had surgery at the Lahey Clinic in nearby Burlington, listed in good condition, and authorities say his prognosis is good.

One suspect, also injured, was arrested. There was no immediate information about the suspect's condition, State Police spokesman David Procopio said.

Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone says police are looking for three other suspects who may be armed.

"We will continue to branch out from this Woburn location in as many areas as we need to until we know that all the suspects are in custody," Leone said.

Gunfire broke out in a parking lot after an attempted robbery at Musto Jewelers, a shop on the second floor of a commercial building between a dental office and a chiropractor in an area known as Four Corners.

Andrew Sylvester said he was in his garage nearby when he heard gunshots and ran to toward them because his sister was at a nearby Dunkin' Donuts.

"I saw a bunch of commotion, cop cars coming down the street. Then I saw the SWAT cops getting ready, putting their jackets on and running," he said.

Dozens of police cruisers from Woburn, surrounding towns and state police rushed to the scene, about 15 miles north of Boston.

In December, Woburn officer John "Jack" Maguire was fatally shot during an attempted department store jewelry robbery, leading to an overhaul of the state Parole Board. The parolee who shot Maguire was also killed.
