Health Officials Satisfied With Occupy Boston Conditions

Boston health officials on Wednesday found no concerns at the camp set up by Occupy Boston demonstrators near South Station.

Occupy Boston kitchen volunteers say all food is prepared off-site and then served from their makeshift kitchen. Food handlers wear gloves, and there's a special three-step system for washing dishes.

"Uh, I've seen better, but they were trying," said Charles Cook, who runs the city's Inspectional Services Department. "They had the general idea of what they're supposed to be doing. And hopefully with the recommendations the inspectors gave them it will be even better.

Cook says the city received an anonymous complaint that the protesters were preparing "hazardous" food in their kitchen. But, according to Cook, they're making little more than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Inspectors will return later to check on their kitchen.

Barbara Ferrer, the city's public health commissioner, also walked through the site and talked to the nurses volunteering at the medical tent. She doesn't see any problems and called the encampment "well-organized."
