Ex-Mass. State Rep. Resolves Campaign Finance Case

A judge has placed a former Boston legislator on pretrial probation for five years and ordered him to pay a fine and restitution for misdemeanor violations of state campaign finance law.

Judge Frances McIntyre declined to accept a guilty plea Tuesday from former South Boston Rep. Brian Wallace, saying similar cases usually are resolved in civil, not criminal, court.

Wallace acknowledged in court he didn't properly document $51,000 in spending for his 2008 re-election campaign, or another $6,345 in contributions. McIntyre fined him $1,000 and ordered him to pay restitution to the Office of Campaign and Political Finance for about $35,000 in campaign expenses questioned by prosecutors. If he complies and avoids future trouble, the charges will be dismissed.

Wallace said he never took advantage of public office to make money.
