Cape Cod bridges*, which cross over Meetinghouse Lane and the Bourne Scenic Highway in Bourne, are getting new names. As State House News Service reports:

[The bridges] received a new name Thursday from lawmakers honoring Staff Sergeant Matthew Pucino, a decorated war hero killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009 when his mounted patrol unit was attacked with an IED.

The Senate passed the bill earlier this month. On Thursday, according to State House News, "House Speaker Robert DeLeo introduced the bill and then welcomed the staff sergeant’s mother and father, Albert and Catherine."

As the Associated Press has reported:

The 34-year-old Massachusetts native grew up in Plymouth and Bourne and went to Bishop Stang High School in North Dartmouth. He worked part-time as a Yarmouth police officer in the mid-1990s, before enlisting in the Army in 2002.

The bridges will be known as the Staff Sergeant Matthew A. Pucino bridges. According to the Legislature:

The division of highways in the Massachusetts Department of Transportation shall erect and maintain suitable markers bearing that designation in compliance with the standards of the division.

Correction: An earlier version of this post, using State House News reporting, stated that it was Bourne Bridge that was renamed. This post has been updated throughout.
