Crews Work To Clean Up Gas Spill On I-95

Update at 11 a.m.: State environmental officials are cleaning up after a tanker accident late Monday spilled 8,000 gallons of gasoline onto I-95 in Woburn.

The interstate is open, but environmental spokesman Ed Colletta says the gas cleanup will continue over the next few days.

"Gas did impact the soil into the sides of the embankment," he said. "It also impacted the storm drainage system that is along the highway, and there are a number of outfalls taht lead into the Aberjona River."

The accident tied up traffic for several hours during the Tuesday morning commute.

Update at 7 a.m.: All southbound and northbound lanes are now open. However, traffic is still backed up and police are advising drivers to seek an alternate route.

Update at 6:10 a.m.: Two southbound lanes are now open.

WOBURN, Mass. — State police say a tanker truck flipped over and spilled about 8,000 gallons of gasoline on a major highway outside of Boston.

Police say the truck flipped at about 10 p.m. Monday on Interstate 95/Route 128 in Woburn.

Because of the gasoline's flammability, the highway was shut down both north and south. Several nearby homes and businesses were evacuated. The northbound lanes have been reopened and just one southbound lane reopened at about 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The driver of the tanker was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Commuters are being urged to find alternate routes to work.

The crash remains under investigation.
