Massport Extends Free Silver Line Rides From Logan

MBTA riders will get free Silver Line trips from Logan Airport for another month.

Massport is extending the pilot program, which started June 6, until the end of September. It was slated to conclude on Sept. 3.

Massport spokesman Matt Brelis told our Newscast unit that they want more data on whether ridership is increasing naturally or because the rides have been free.

"We want to see how much ridership increases, and if demand is so high and extra service would be needed," he said.

Brelis said any permanent changes to Silver Line fares or schedules from Logan would require the approval of the Massport board.

The Associated Press adds:

Massport said preliminary observations show the buses have spent on average about 20 seconds less at each stop at the airport since the free rides began.

This program aired on July 19, 2012. The audio for this program is not available.
