Mass. Sales Tax Holiday This Weekend
BOSTON — Massachusetts shoppers are getting a break from the state’s 6.25 percent sales tax on most items under $2,500 this weekend. The sales tax holiday is in effect Saturday and Sunday.
Massachusetts Retailers Association President Jon Hurst expects consumers to spend about fives times what they would on a typical August weekend.
“What the sales tax holiday represents for sellers today is the opportunity to bring those consumers back that can easily avoid the sales tax for any number of products with just a few keystrokes of the smartphone,” Hurst said.
Restaurant meals and tobacco aren’t tax exempt.
State officials expect it will be a shot in the arm for businesses. The holiday costs the state about $114 million in lost revenue.
