Newton Police Chief Placed On Administrative Leave

Newton's police chief is on paid leave and could be fired amid allegations he verbally abused a colleague.

An independent investigator confirmed allegations by Chief Matthew Cummings's secretary that he made inappropriate and offensive comments to her.

Newton Mayor Setti Warren says the report clearly shows misconduct by Cummings.

"It was clear to me when I read that report that I would have to and did place Chief Matthew Cummings on administrative paid leave and initiate the process to remove him from office," Warren said.

The report said Cummings was trying to be funny, not deliberately hostile, but that his remarks were insulting.

Warren has appointed Capt. Howard Mintz as the city's acting police chief.
