Lawmakers Urge Doctor To Appeal In Sex-Change Case

Fifty Massachusetts lawmakers are urging the Department of Correction to appeal U.S. District Court Judge Wolf's decision requiring the state to provide sex-change surgery to a convicted murderer.

In a letter released Thursday by Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr's office, the lawmakers wrote that they are "greatly troubled by the Court's finding that the Eighth Amendment requires the state and the Department of Correction to provide sex reassignment surgery to a convicted murderer."

The court ruled in favor of Michelle (formerly Robert) Kosilek, who is serving a life sentence without the possibility of receiving parole for strangling and murdering his wife in 1990.

The lawmakers' appeal was made to Department of Correction Commissioner Luis Spencer.
