Mattapan Murders Retrial Is Under Way

The first full day of testimony gets under way Thursday for the retrial of the suspect charged with a killing three adults and a toddler in Mattapan two years ago.

Prosecutors say Dwayne Moore took part in the drug-related shootings on Sept. 28, 2010. They plan to question the first responders, police officers and EMTs who arrived on Woolson Street in Mattapan to find the victims. Officer Bernard Hicks has already told jurors what he saw.

"A female face down, she was wearing pajamas and there was an officer there tending to an infant. I believe he was trying to do chest compressions," Bernard said.

Moore’s first trial ended in a hung jury. Co-defendant Edward Washington was acquitted.

Both sides used opening statements to prepare the jury for the change in testimony expected from a key witness. Marcus Hurd, the lone survivor who was left paralyzed, said in the first trial he did not see the shooter, but now says he can identify Moore as the man who shot him.

Moore’s lawyer says his client denies the charges.
