When you hit the highway this holiday, chances are you'll have a lot of company. Traffic on the days leading up to Thanksgiving is just about as predictable as turkey and stuffing. Tuesday night travelers crawled for hours in a 30-mile backup on the Massachusetts Turnpike heading west from Boston.

Bill Steffans, vice president of McMahon Associates, a transportation planning and traffic engineering firm in Boston, joined All Things Considered's Steve Brown to talk about traffic patterns and the engineering fixes that might help ease them.

This program aired on November 21, 2012.
