Fire Does Heavy Damage To Fairhaven Landscaper

Authorities say they haven't determined what caused a four-alarm fire at a Fairhaven landscaping business that destroyed a 19th-century barn and three other buildings.

Twenty employees escaped the fire at G. Bourne Knowles and Co. at around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said anyone with information to help investigators can call the state Arson Hotline, but there's no indication this fire was deliberate. Investigators have been looking into a series of arsons in southeastern Massachusetts.

Fire Chief Timothy Francis says arriving firefighters found smoke and flames shooting from the barn's second-floor windows. The blaze was under control within about two hours with help from nearby towns. He said one of those units was in a traffic accident that sent the driver of a car to the hospital. Four firefighters had minor injuries.
