President Obama is expected to announce the nomination of U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the next secretary of state as early as this week.

Many media reports say Kerry is the pick, with the announcement delayed by the shootings in Connecticut. Kerry is not commenting on the reports, but senators from both parties say his confirmation is all but certain.

Political analyst Dan Payne joined WBUR's Morning Edition to discuss the special Senate election that could be triggered in Massachusetts if Kerry is chosen.

This program aired on December 17, 2012.
