A winter storm hitting Massachusetts forced some school closures and made for a messy morning commute on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service said snowfall totals are expected to be anywhere from 1 inch to 6 inches across Massachusetts, with more in northern and western parts of the state.

State Police reported spin-outs across the state; the spin-outs delayed already-slow-moving traffic.

The speed limit on the Mass Pike was reduced to 40 miles per hour Wednesday morning and, according to WCVB-TV, a 40-mile backup was reported in Interstate-93 South from Derry, N.H., extending all the way into Boston.

The snow was expected to taper off later Wednesday morning and turn to rain in some areas.

Most school closings and delayed openings were in central and western parts of the state. Schools were open in Boston.
