BOSTON Congressman Stephen Lynch says he knows he has to decide soon whether to run for John Kerry’s Senate seat. Kerry is expected to resign his seat next week if he’s confirmed as the next secretary of state.
At the State House, where he attended Gov. Deval Patrick’s State of the State address Wednesday night, Lynch said he’s undaunted by the fact that the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee has endorsed Rep. Ed Markey.
“The Democratic Senate Committee has about $40 million, so when they get behind a candidate, that’s a powerful influence, but it doesn’t affect my decision,” Lynch said. “I’m going to do what I’m going to do based on how I can do across the commonwealth.”
How Lynch does across the state could depend on how many candidates get in the race. He is more conservative than Markey on some social issues and could benefit if Markey ends up splitting the vote with another liberal, such as Rabbi Jonah Pesner, who is also considering a run.
Unions are split between Lynch and Markey.
