Coakley, Grossman Back Markey For U.S. Senate

U.S. Rep. Edward Markey has won the backing of Attorney General Martha Coakley and state Treasurer Steve Grossman in his bid to fill John Kerry's U.S. Senate seat if Kerry is confirmed as secretary of state.

The endorsement of the two high-profile statewide officials comes as Markey seeks to clear the Democratic field ahead of an expected special election which will likely be held this summer.

Markey is the only declared candidate.

Coakley called Markey a leader on toughening telecommunications laws, easing dependence on foreign oil and protecting women's reproductive rights.

Grossman echoed Coakley and also pointed to what he called Markey's "unshakable commitment to a strong U.S.-Israel relationship."

Former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is considering running on the Republican side.

Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch is also weighing a run.
