The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of eastern Massachusetts. The warning runs from Saturday at 7 p.m. until Sunday at 7 p.m.

"There is the potential for heavy snow along with strong winds," the NWS posted on its website Saturday afternoon, predicting six to eight inches in the Boston area and up to 10 inches on the Cape.

As of 6 p.m. Saturday, affected counties include Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth and Suffolk. (Check county-by-county statuses from the NWS.)

Meteorologist Mark Rosenthal said the coastal storm will intensify quickly.

"It means steady snow will develop in Boston after 8 p.m. tonight and become heavy after midnight. I think heavy snow will persist into tomorrow morning, at least until midday, with very strong north winds," Rosenthal told WBUR.

"I think the very worst of it could be in southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the Islands, where they may see blizzard conditions very late tonight into Sunday morning," he continued. "In the Greater Boston area, I'm thinking six inches or more. For Cape Cod and the Islands, it could be a foot or more of snow."

Rosenthal predicted that temperatures will fall into the 20s in the Greater Boston area on Saturday, giving way to a powdery snow in the evening. He also noted that winds will pick up.

"The wind [on Sunday] is very much a factor, perhaps gusting over 50 miles per hour. That means lots of blowing and drifting of the snow," he said.

But Rosenthal did acknowledge that things could change. "Of course, any shift in the storm tracking east or west makes all the difference in the world."
