Survey: Riders Want Extended MBTA Hours

Thousands of people responding to an online survey say they would welcome the MBTA extending service later into the night, and would even be willing to wait longer and pay more.

But that doesn't mean it's going to happen.

A spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority tells The Boston Globe that the agency first has to stabilize its finances before thinking about extending service.

The survey was conducted by the voluntary Rider Oversight Committee. The committee thought about 500 people would respond to the survey asking about extending subway and bus hours. Instead. Almost 26,000 people did, most in favor, saying it would enhance their social lives or allow them to study later.

The MBTA's subway lines currently stop running at about 1 a.m.
