New Bedford Encourages Residents To 'Beautify' Vacant Lots

In an attempt to reduce the number of vacant lots in New Bedford, the city's mayor announced a new effort called the "Side Yard Program." It will allow property owners to buy city-owned vacant lots that abut their property at steeply discounted rates.

Qualified owners could buy an adjoining piece of property for as little as $250, with the lot price determined by the size of the land.

The city hopes to see property owners turn vacant lots into side yards, gardens or off-street parking in order to "beautify the neighborhood," according to a press release.

"I encourage everyone bordering a vacant lot to purchase that property and build a garden or give your family room to spread out,” City Councilor Henry Bousquet said in a statement.
