BOSTON — Powerful thunderstorms moving through Massachusetts have caused street flooding, downed trees and scattered power outages.
The storms caused flooding in communities including Springfield, Fitchburg and Lowell on Monday afternoon, before more storms led to several tornado warnings for storm rotation in northeastern Massachusetts.
On Interstate 91 in Springfield, traffic was heavy amid warnings on highway signs of debris on the roadway.
In Westfield, Police Sgt. Paul Beebe told The Republican newspaper that when the rain fell it “just inundated everything.”
Western Massachusetts Electric Company reported about 60 people without power as of mid-afternoon on Monday.
