As Bulger Defense Nears End, His Testimony Uncertain

BOSTON — The defense in reputed Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger’s racketeering trial is winding down, but it’s still unclear whether he’ll testify in his own defense.

Defense attorney J.W. Carney on Thursday told the judge the defense plans to call two more witnesses Friday and will read portions of a deposition given by the mother of one of the people Bulger is accused of killing. Carney indicated Bulger hasn’t decided whether he’ll testify.

The 83-year-old Bulger is accused in a broad racketeering indictment of participating in 19 murders in the 1970s and ’80s while leading the Winter Hill Gang. He has pleaded not guilty.

Bulger fled Boston in 1994. He was one of the nation’s most wanted fugitives until he was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011.
