Intel To Close Mass. Factory, Lay Off 700

BOSTON — Intel Corp. is shutting down a Massachusetts factory and about 700 people will lose their jobs.

The microchip manufacturer will close its plant in Hudson at the end of next year.

Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy says the plant has outlived its usefulness and is assembling technology five generations behind current models.

“The newer technology takes a far larger site, far more resources than the footprint would enable us to do in the Hudson area,” he said.

Mulloy says Intel hopes to repurpose the factory and eventually sell it, but Intel will retain hundreds of jobs at a research and development facility that shares the Hudson location.

One wonders if the new “tech tax” had any impact on the decision to go to someplace more friendly.
