Massachusetts state police say a Weymouth man who reportedly failed to stop for a red light has struck a vehicle driven by a Melrose woman in Stoneham, leaving the 38-year-old victim with life-threatening injuries.

Troopers responded to the crash scene on Saturday morning. Several witnesses said a 36-year-old Weymouth man did not stop for a red light before he slammed into a car driven by the woman.

The victim's car hit a fence adjacent to the road and firefighters had to extricate her from the vehicle. She was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Police continue to investigate and did not immediately name those involved in the crash. There was no word on whether charges have been filed against the man.
