Middlesex DA To Face Challenge From Court Official

It appears there will be a contested Democratic primary next year for the post of Middlesex district attorney.

Michael Sullivan, the clerk of courts for Middlesex County, tells the Lowell Sun that he has decided to challenge incumbent District Attorney Marian Ryan.

Sullivan, a 54-year-old former Cambridge mayor, says he'll make an official announcement early next year. He ran unsuccessfully for DA in 1998 and has been the court clerk since 2007.

Ryan is seeking election to a full four-year term after being appointed earlier this year by Gov. Deval Patrick to fill the remainder of Gerard Leone's term as district attorney in the state's most populous county. Leone resigned to join a private law firm.

Ryan said she welcomed Sullivan to the race.
