Ex-Lawrence Officer Gets 18-Month Prison Sentence
A former Lawrence police officer has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for his role in a city towing kickback scheme.
P.J. Lopez was also sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Boston to three years' probation and fined $10,000, half of which must be paid within 60 days.
The 47-year-old Lopez was found guilty in October of bribery, obstruction of justice and lying to a federal agent.
Prosecutors say the 16-year department veteran and father of four purchased several vehicles at reduced rates and received a $4,000 snow plow in exchange for sending police-ordered tows to M & W Towing from December 2010 to June 2011.
The Eagle-Tribune reports that Lopez asked for leniency and said he was "embarrassed" by the conviction.
