Brief Break From Cold, Then Deep Freeze Set To Return

You will notice a brief break from the cold this morning as you step outside. Temperatures are in the 20s to lower 30s and will rise above freezing on a brisk southerly wind. Don’t become used to this mild air as the deep freeze will return this evening.

There is a line of snow and even some rain showers pushing eastward this morning. As the precipitation nears the area later this morning and early afternoon, a few rain and snow showers will cross the region.

Even if the precipitation starts as rain, it will likely end as a brief snow shower. There could be a coating of snow on some roads before the evening commute. Across northern Worcester County and into southern Vermont a quick inch of snow is possible.

As the snow showers end this evening, cold arctic air will rush back and temperatures will plummet. By morning the mercury will stand at 10 degrees Fahrenheit in Boston and be several degrees colder to the west and north.

The cold remains with us through Thursday before moderating over the weekend. Speaking of the weekend, I will be watching for the development of some precipitation Sunday. Currently, there isn’t enough data to be confident in whether we even see any rain or snow.

Today: A few rain and snow showers later this morning and afternoon. The precipitation will end as snow showers. Quite windy. Highs in the upper 30s, but by sunset, temperatures are set to fall below freezing.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 10 in Boston; 5 north and west of the city and 14 on Cape/Islands. Wind chill below zero.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high of 15-20. A gusty wind will keep wind chill below zero all day.

Tuesday Night: A few passing clouds and cold. Lows between 2-10. Lower teens Cape/Islands

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high of 21-27.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 10-15.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high of 24-29.

Thursday night: Mostly cloudy, not as cold with a low between 17-22.

Friday: Partly sunny, with a high of 32-38.
