Republican Heffernan To Run For Mass. Treasurer

A Republican businessman from Wellesley has entered the race for state treasurer.

Mike Heffernan announced his candidacy on Monday. He says if elected he'll use his years of experience in the financial sector to help protect tax dollars, secure the state's pension system and increase economic competitiveness.

Heffernan worked for Citigroup's Markets and Banking Division before recently co-founding Mobiquity, a Wellesley-based mobile-tech firm with more than 300 employees.

He is the first Republican to enter the race to succeed Steve Grossman, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor.

Two Democrats, state Rep. Tom Conroy of Wayland and former Brookline selectman Deb Goldberg, have announced their candidacies for the treasurer's post. Democratic State Sen. Barry Finegold of Andover is also weighing a run.
